Charles Mill Marina and Pleasant Hill Marina have been recognized as certified Ohio Clean Marinas. The designation reflects the work our staff and our partners at the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD) have put into protecting the water quality of Charles Mill Lake and Pleasant Hill Lake.
About the Ohio Clean Marinas Program
The Ohio Clean Marinas Program is a voluntary certification run by Ohio Sea Grant and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). It started on Lake Erie in the mid-2000s and expanded to inland lakes and rivers in 2015.
Participating marinas commit to best management practices that reduce their impact on the water, including waste handling, equipment maintenance, recycling, and boater education. Program staff then visit the marina to confirm it meets the standards before awarding certification.
What It Means at Our Marinas
Clean water is what makes a good day on the lake possible. Whether you're fishing the quiet, 10-horsepower waters of Charles Mill Lake or skiing on the 850-acre Pleasant Hill Lake, the health of the water affects everyone who uses it.
You'll notice more signage around both marinas explaining environmentally friendly practices, along with rules that prohibit activities harmful to the lakes. Charles Mill Marina also takes part in an MWCD shrink-wrap recycling effort, funded by an Ohio EPA grant, that bundles used boat wrap so it can be recycled instead of sent to a landfill.
How Boaters Can Help
A marina can't keep a lake clean on its own. A few simple habits make a difference:
- Clean, drain, and dry your boat, trailer, and gear before moving between lakes to avoid spreading invasive species.
- Don't top off your fuel tank, and keep an absorbent pad nearby to catch drips.
- Bring trash back to shore, including used fishing line, for proper disposal or recycling.
- Use biodegradable, phosphate-free soap when washing your boat.
Boaters can also take the Ohio Clean Boater Pledge through the Ohio Clean Marinas Program.
